the new jersey governor, a top romney surroga surrogate, heeds praise on president obama. >> the president called me. i appreciate that call from the president. it was very proactive and i appreciate that type of leadership. the president is great. i spoke to him three times yesterday pep called me for the last time at midnight last night. asked me what i needed. i said if you could expedite the major declaration without the fema mumbo jumbo. i got a call from fema at 2 a.m. the president has been all over this and he deserves great credit. i was on the phone with him yesterday three times personally. he gave me his number at the white house. told me to call him. and he absolutely means it. the president has been outstanding in this. so the folks at fema, craig fugate and his folks have been excellent. >> the president deserves great credit. he's been outstanding. a republican praising a democrat. but the powerful fact is this wasn't about politics. this was genuine thanks to a president focused on taking care of americans. president obama has canceled all campaign events through tomorrow

for the romney campaign, his praise of the commander in chief storm response has been oversized and unsensored, downright christy-en. this display of bipartisan has created confusion on both sides of the aisle. in today's "new york times" maureen dowd writes that, quote -- white house officials seem a bit flummoxed by christie's bear hug. they speculate christie who always puts chris fi first has decided it's better for his presidential ambitions to be a maverick blue state governor with a democratic chief executive exiting in 2016 than to have president romney and tea party republicans in congress pulling him to the extreme right for the next eight years. christie for his part shrugged off the notion of political calculus in an interview last flight. >> the president does things that deserve praise, i will give him praise. and when the president does things that deserves scorn i'll give him scorn. when someone asks me an honest question i give an honest answer. how has the president been to deal with? he's been outstanding to deal with on this and i look forward to see him tomorrow. >> mitt r

tomorrow night. both the romney and obama campaigns have canceled scheduled events already due to sandy. so if you're in an affected area, stay inside, stay off the roads and stay tuned into msnbc. all right. now, let's turn to the final countdown. i wanted to sing that but i don't have a very good singing voice. but we're in the final days and we can all agree that the way a political candidate runs a race is important, but how a candidate closes the deal is crucial. and with just one more week left until election day, this is when the candidates' closing strategies kick in. while we've harped on battleground states, a new analysis by the associated press shows in the case to 270, may come down to 106 counties. these are counties with names like hamilton county, ohio, loudoun county, virginia, and hills bborough county, florida. they're the same ones that george w. bush won in 2004 and that then senator obama wan in 2008. these are the swing voters. and part of the candidates' closing strategy is to hit at as many of these areas as possible before election day. because the latest polls sho
